The NWA NAACP Scholarship shall be awarded annually at the NWA NAACP Scholarship Banquet. The 2. Scholarship will be disbursed in the academic year in which the scholarship is awarded. 3. When finances are available, one-time academic year scholarships in the amount of $1,000.00, will be given to an individual who is living in Northwest Arkansas (Benton, Madison or Washington county) and currently enrolled in an accredited college or university in NWA, or any accredited University. 4. Scholarship applications will be available for interested parties no later than February 1, 2025. Applications must be emailed to http://nwanaacp@gmail.com and received no later than 5:00 pm on April 15, 2025. 5. The members of the NWA NAACP scholarship committee shall review the applications and submit their recommendations to the NWA NAACP Executive Board for final approval. Once the name(s) has/have been accepted by the Board, the recipient(s) will be notified via email. Recipients will be invited to take award photos and the recipients will be highlighted on social media after May 1, 2025. Once the student has fulfilled the obligation of submitting proof of enrollment, the scholarship will be sent to the chosen institution in the name of the student. The NAACP was formed partly in response to the continuing horrific practice of lynching and the 1908 race riot in Springfield, the capital of Illinois, and the resting place of President Abraham Lincoln. Appalled at the violence that was committed against blacks, a group of white liberals that included Mary White Ovington and Oswald Garrison Villard, both the descendants of abolitionists, William English Walling and Dr. Henry Moscowitz issued a call for a meeting to discuss racial justice. Some 60 people, seven of whom were African American (including W. E. B. Du Bois, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, and Mary Church Terrell), signed the call, which was released on the centennial of Lincoln’s birth.
